About Us...


We have owned and operated Carried Away in the same Aptos Center location since November 1989. Prior to this, we both worked at Chez Panisse in Berkeley for many years. Not only did Chez Panisse bring us together, but it shaped our food philosophy of using the freshest, seasonal ingredients prepared with passion and care. We take pride in preparing high quality foods using primarily organic, locally-sourced ingredients.

Our cozy shop is open daily except for Sunday and offers take-out items for lunch and dinner. We make soups, salads, sandwiches, dinner entrées, and desserts from scratch daily. Thin-crust pizza is available Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Our catering business has also flourished over the years, and we have accumulated a great deal of experience in handling many types of occasions, from intimate dinner parties to larger events such as weddings and corporate functions.

Tom heads up our kitchen and has been cooking professionally for over 25 years. He is the mastermind behind our seasonal menu and oversees our very competent kitchen staff. He grew up in Berkeley and graduated from cooking school in 1982. Prior to working at Chez Panisse, he was at South Park Café and Stanford Court among other San Francisco restaurants. When he is not in the kitchen or spending time with our two children, Olivia and Marlon, he can be found on the golf course.

Mima is a people person and has been dubbed a “whirling dervish” by local press. She previously managed operations and built the catering end of the business; however, she presently teaches full-time at Georgiana Bruce Kirby Preparatory School in Santa Cruz. She grew up in the food business in Oakland, where her mother opened La Farine, an upscale bakery. Along with her cooking and pastry experience, Mima has earned a degree in Comparative Literature and French from University of California, Berkeley.

We reside in Aptos and participate in our community extensively. We have raised funds for a restaurant family who lost the father/owner to a shooting and for Mar Vista’s organic gardens. We have also donated to many organizations such as Hospice Caring Project, The Long Marine Lab, Women’s Crisis Support, Habitat for Humanity, Planned Parenthood, Cabrillo College, Cultural Council, and many local schools. We appreciate the community’s support of us and we are committed to giving back!
